Repair LUTINE 25 and 26 August 2021

At the stroke of 10 o'clock we arrive at the town hall of Terschelling. We are welcomed by Remko Pals, head of Technical Service. He leads us to the Lutine and then to room 0.20 where the repairs will be made.

Dirk lifts Lutine's model very carefully from the box to the table where the repairs are to be carried out. When you see that care, you realize that such care is not used by everyone. The Lutine is therefore more vulnerable than many realize. Damage is then lurking when you transport the Lutine. Dirk therefore advises not to lend this beautiful model.

After a first inspection by Dirk, the Lutine appears to have suffered more damage than the one mast that has broken off. Then he goes straight to work. He initially repairs the broken mast. This includes glue and a hair dryer for hard drying and of course Dirk's enormous precision.

This mast is provided with a bandage of rope so that the whole is strong again. Pulleys are positioned and various wires are renewed and fastened. Now everything can dry and on the second day of the repair Dirk paints with extreme precision the bandages that he previously applied to the three masts. After the Lutine is ready, Dirk takes it carefully to the hall.

At a certain point the camera crew from Terschelling TV arrives there. To our great surprise, Hessel van de Kooij uses the camera. Hessel is a folk singer and world famous in the Netherlands and especially on Terschelling. Maaike interviews Dirk spontaneously.

Then comes the most exciting part of the repair. The Plexiglas dust cover must be lifted high and placed over the Lutine without damaging a mast. Hessel lends a hand and with Remko and Huub, Dirk also gets this job done.

The Lutine can again be viewed by the general public in the beautiful hall of the town hall of Terschelling.

Images of the Lutine and the interview with maritime model designer Dirk can be seen via You Tube in the Terschelling TV newsreel of 28 August.
